"Obviously I had no interest whatsoever in a discussion about Dangote (not my thing)"

I burst out laughing.

The case brought by Dangote that you referred to was truly appalling. No wonder former employees rarely have anything positive to say about that conglomerate.

Imagine being made to sign a five‑year bond for a one‑year training program in India, only to have the training cut short after nine months, then be posted to another sister company, subjected to repeated salary deductions, and finally sued for punitive damages when you decide to break free from what amounts to modern‑day servitude. Omo.

The number of "ah" and "ahn ahn" as I read the thing ehn.

It was shameful to read. I couldn't believe it. The poor girl was basically terrorised until the NIC came to her rescue.

As a former Dangote staff, I promise you no matter how bad you think it’s, it’s wayyy worse than that.

Key takeaways for me.

This outrageous pay gaps exist because people have very minimal options of employment. If there were more employers, perhaps employees would have some options.

Dangote Cement being the most profitable world wide just shows how terrible we have it as a country. Cos we can see a straight link between this and the crazy cost of housing.

And they can pay more if they wish to. But this is a capitalist market

Special thanks to "he who must not be named"

I don't think I've ever been this flabbergasted in my entire life, and this is coming from a university undegrad who had zero interest in topics of this discipline before 😂

the case between Dangote and Johnson was so shocking, because I know by default that billionaires and multibillion dollar corporations are evil, but the level of shamelessness he displayed in seeking to punish that lady was scary

So, your hero, although outstanding, is not unique but is an example of a more general type. The system which reproduces and empowers the type becomes the issue. People think this system is ‘Nigerian capitalism’ but it isn't: it's Nigerian neo-patrimonialism with deep continuities in the pre-colonial slave raiding economy in which enslavement was the norm. Plus ca change as the band plays on, until eventually…

I think the purchasing power parity is an excellent methodological inclusion! Thinking more generally now, it would be nice to have some sort of idea how the skill level of the “typical employee” in these companies differ because that might be an explanation, the manufacturing industry subset may allude to it but it might not be definitive enough. With data and time constraints this is really good, thank you!

the data on Dangote Cement is just diabolical.

More people need to read your exposés cause people are really blinded by the flashiness of Nigerian corporations.

This doesn't look good. something has to change about our labor laws.

The cost of the minimum wage raise as a percentage of pretax profits is so small that it made me wonder - did you adjust for the cascading effect of the increase on employees who currently earn above the minimum wage?

In the public sector, at least, this has been the state government's argument against implementing minimum wage. The people earning above minimum wage will need an increase too. A supervisor who currently earns N120k suddenly gets subordinates with N105k and wants more. I won't be surprised if an employer like Dangote have many of such people.

In the private sector, it can be argued that the cascading effect won't have to go all the way to the top. After all, people at the top are paid closer to market wage.

It’s a good question. Apart from the fact this was a quick exercise, because the majority of the Dangote staff are below that line, there is less of a drag-along effect. But if we were doing this for everyone as a general exercise, then yes that would need to be considered

lol still ended up talking about dangote
